I was a little surprised yesterday when my boss came over and announced that she was working on reviews and would be observing us in action. Uh oh. I think that any good employee should have a little insecurity; it’s the ones that feel safe and beyond criticism that start to slack off and are suddenly less useful than they once may have been.

I did get a chance to take a quick look at a couple of pages of the evaluation form and saw nothing but check marks in the far left column, so that’s a good sign. There were also some comments about a few errors from other shifts that I caught, saving us from stranding a few customers in the middle of nowhere for several hours when they should have been transported in no more than 15 minutes. The graveyard shift does a lot of the preparatory paperwork for the next day, and the guy does a pretty good job, but not a perfect job. I live by the motto ‘Trust, but verify’, and although it may look like I don’t have faith in my co-workers, if a problem occurs on my watch I will be held responsible so I had best make sure everything is configured properly.

There may be other stuff, some negative, on other pages of the evaluation, but so far everything looks good. I know I’m not perfect, so times like this are a good time to find out where improvements can be made. Who knows if this will lead to more money, but I did get an increase at the beginning of the year so I’m not going to hold my breath. A little extra would be nice as I save up for a down payment on a house. I just learned today that my sister just moved into a new house a couple of weeks ago, but it looks like my budget will be about $1.2M less than she paid for her place...

The evaluation is always important, but if a manager is doing his/her job right, there should be nothing in it that’s a surprise. Constant feedback all year round is the best way for everyone to be happy. Employees need to feel appreciated if they are and how to improve if they need to.

Several jobs ago I had an evaluation from a new supervisor. “I’m going to put down that you don’t understand the gaging since nobody understands how he gages work.” Well alright then...

As soon as I had found out my boss was leaving and who was going to become my boss I had already cleaned up the resume and started the job search. By the time of the “evaluation” I was already in the interview process somewhere else. For my personal entertainment during the “evaluation”, every time we made eye contact I held it until they looked away first. Good times when you’ve got a terrible supervisor but a new job on the line.

I’ve got a really good boss. She can be intimidating at first, but once you prove yourself you have an ally for life. Training for this position can be a bear, and several have washed out in the process. Even though I’m relatively new, I made the cut for the ‘A’ team to come in and make things happen during peak and challenging times.

Contrast this to an idiot I worked for back about 18 years ago. When it came to reviews he had already made up his mind as to who was going to get the available raises, so to pay for the kids-ass slacker he liked he admitted that he had to make up some negative things to put on my review to justify his decision, but not too worry, what was on the review wasn’t really what he thought of my performance. Excuse me? That sounds like grounds for a lawsuit if I could prove it. To show how dense he was he’d introduce himself by saying his first name and last name, which was Sargeant, and would then say “That’s Sargeant, spelled just like the rank”. I ever so tactfully pulled him aside one day and quietly and politely mentioned that the rank is spelled sEr, not sAr...
